typing by touch |
|
Bob Jones taught himself to touch type in his first job as a journalist with the Investors Chronicle, part of the Financial Times group. In those days the graduate trainees had secretaries to do their typing for them. His journalist career, which included working for Forbes Magazine in New York, The Economist and The Times, was mostly spent writing about business, industrial relations and management. He developed the typing tutorial while he was working in the Department of Journalism at City University. He became interested in the Dvorak layout because students were reluctant to put in the necessary practice to learn the QWERTY keyboard. Unsurprisingly, since most of the British journalists who came to talk to them prided themselves on bashing the typewriter keyboard with macho vigour. He has used the Dvorak keyboard layout himself since 1996.
